Types of Drug Testing Available
Pre-Employment Drug Testing
Screen job candidates before hiring to ensure a drug-free workplace.
What’s Tested:
- 5-panel drug test (most common): Marijuana, Cocaine, Amphetamines, Opiates, PCP
- 10-panel drug test: Adds Benzodiazepines, Barbiturates, Methadone, Propoxyphene, Quaaludes
- Custom panels available
Cost: $45-$90 per test Results: 24-72 hours (negative results typically within 24 hours) Specimen: Urine (most common), oral fluid, or hair follicle
How It Works:
- Employer sends you to collection site
- You provide specimen under supervision
- Specimen sent to SAMHSA-certified lab
- Results reviewed by Medical Review Officer (MRO)
- Employer receives results (positive/negative only)
What to Bring:
- Photo ID
- Employer authorization form (provided by employer)
- List of prescription medications (optional but helpful)
DOT Drug Testing (FMCSA, PHMSA, FRA, FAA)
Federally mandated testing for commercial drivers, pipeline operators, railroad workers, and aviation personnel.
DOT Requirements:
- 5-panel urine test ONLY (no other panels or specimens acceptable)
- Collected by DOT-certified collector
- Tested at SAMHSA-certified laboratory
- Results reviewed by MRO
- Reported to FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse (if positive)
DOT Testing Types:
- Pre-employment (before driving)
- Random (50% annual rate for drugs, 10% for alcohol)
- Post-accident (within 32 hours of accident)
- Reasonable suspicion (supervisor-directed)
- Return-to-duty (after positive test)
- Follow-up (minimum 6 tests over 12 months)
DOT 5-Panel Tests For:
- Marijuana (THC)
- Cocaine
- Amphetamines (including methamphetamine)
- Opiates (codeine, morphine, heroin, and now includes hydrocodone, hydromorphone, oxycodone, oxymorphone)
- Phencyclidine (PCP)
Cost: $45-$55 per DOT drug test Alcohol Test: $35 (breath alcohol test using DOT-approved device)
DOT Collection Process:
- Present photo ID to collector
- Remove outer garments, empty pockets
- Provide urine specimen (minimum 45mL)
- Specimen temperature checked immediately
- Specimen split into two bottles (primary and split)
- Sign chain of custody form
- Specimen sent to lab same day
Important DOT Rules:
- Cannot schedule your own random test (employer/consortium schedules)
- Must report immediately when selected
- Cannot delay more than necessary
- Refusal to test = positive test
- Positive result requires SAP evaluation before returning to duty
Random Drug Testing
Unannounced testing for employees in safety-sensitive positions.
How Random Testing Works:
- Computer randomly selects employees from pool
- Selected employees notified immediately
- Must report for testing right away
- Specimen collected using standard procedures
- Results reported to employer
Who Needs Random Testing:
- DOT-regulated employees (required by federal law)
- Safety-sensitive positions (employer discretion)
- Employees in drug testing programs
- Probationers (court-ordered)
Random Selection Rates:
- DOT drug testing: 50% of employees annually
- DOT alcohol testing: 10% of employees annually
- Non-DOT rates: Employer determines
Cost: $45-$65 per random drug test
Cannot be scheduled in advance – defeats the “random” purpose. Employer or consortium notifies you when selected.
Post-Accident Drug Testing
Required testing after workplace accidents or incidents.
When Required:
- DOT post-accident: Within 32 hours for drug test, 8 hours for alcohol test
- OSHA recordable injuries
- Significant property damage
- Fatality or serious injury
- Employer policy after accidents
What’s Tested:
- Standard 5-panel or 10-panel drug test
- Breath alcohol test (if within 8 hours)
- May include reasonable suspicion observations
Available 24/7: Post-accident testing cannot wait for regular business hours. We offer:
- Emergency testing hotline: (432) 253-8958
- Mobile collectors dispatched to accident scenes
- Hospital coordination for injured employees
- After-hours collection at emergency facilities
Important Timing:
- Drug test: Must occur within 32 hours of accident
- Alcohol test: Must occur within 8 hours of accident
- Document if testing cannot occur within timeframes
- Employee must remain available for testing
Cost: $75-$125 (higher for emergency/mobile service)
Hair Follicle Drug Testing
Extended detection window testing (up to 90 days).
Why Hair Testing:
- Detects drug use over past 90 days
- Cannot be adulterated like urine
- Ideal for pre-employment screening
- Less invasive collection
What’s Detected:
- Marijuana
- Cocaine
- Amphetamines/Methamphetamine
- Opiates (heroin, codeine, morphine)
- PCP
- Expanded panels available (benzodiazepines, etc.)
Collection Process:
- Collector cuts small sample of hair (approximately 100-120 strands)
- Cut close to scalp from multiple areas of head
- If head hair unavailable, body hair can be used
- Sample placed in foil and sent to lab
- No pain, no needles, quick process
Detection Times:
- Standard test: 90 days
- Can detect single use or chronic use
- Shows pattern of use over time
Cost: $125-$150 per test Results: 3-5 business days
Note: Hair testing is NOT acceptable for DOT/federal testing. Only used for non-DOT employer testing and certain legal/custody cases.
Return-to-Duty & Follow-Up Testing
Required testing after an employee tests positive and completes SAP process.
Return-to-Duty Process:
- Employee tests positive
- Remove from safety-sensitive duties
- Complete SAP (Substance Abuse Professional) evaluation
- Follow SAP recommendations (treatment, education, etc.)
- SAP issues return-to-duty recommendation
- Employee takes return-to-duty drug test
- Test must be negative before returning to work
- Begin follow-up testing program (minimum 6 tests in 12 months)
Follow-Up Testing:
- Minimum 6 tests over 12 months (DOT requirement)
- SAP may require up to 60 months of testing
- Tests are unannounced but not random
- Tests can occur any time (not limited to work hours)
- Employee pays for follow-up testing (typically)
Cost:
- Return-to-duty test: $55-$75
- Follow-up tests: $45-$65 each
- SAP evaluation: $400-$800 (separate from testing)
We Coordinate:
- SAP referrals nationwide
- Return-to-duty test scheduling
- Follow-up testing schedule management
- Employer notification of results
Reasonable Suspicion Drug Testing
Testing based on observed behavior indicating possible drug or alcohol use.
When Used:
- Observable behavior (slurred speech, unsteady gait, odor)
- Performance issues (accidents, errors, safety violations)
- Physical symptoms (dilated pupils, tremors, drowsiness)
- Witnessed drug/alcohol use
Legal Requirements:
- Must be based on specific, documented observations
- Observer must be trained (DOT requires supervisor training)
- Must occur as soon as possible after observations
- Cannot be used to harass or discriminate
Documentation Required:
- Date, time, and location of observations
- Specific behaviors observed
- Name of supervisor making observations
- Witness statements (if any)
Available Immediately: We provide same-day reasonable suspicion testing at all locations. For after-hours needs, call our emergency line.
Cost: $50-$75
Oral Fluid (Saliva) Drug Testing
Fast, non-invasive alternative to urine testing.
Advantages:
- Difficult to adulterate
- Direct observation during collection
- Less invasive than urine
- Detects recent use (24-48 hours)
- Quick collection (2-3 minutes)
What’s Tested:
- Same substances as urine (5-panel, 10-panel, etc.)
- Shorter detection window
- Indicates very recent use
Collection Process:
- Oral swab placed in mouth
- Absorbs saliva for 2-3 minutes
- Sealed and sent to lab or read instantly (rapid test)
- No bathroom needed
- Cannot be substituted or diluted
Detection Times:
- Most drugs: 24-48 hours
- Shorter window than urine testing
- Good for reasonable suspicion or post-accident
Cost: $65-$85 per test Results: Instant (on-site rapid test) or 24-48 hours (lab confirmation)
Note: Some states restrict oral fluid testing for employment. Check local regulations.
Instant Drug Testing
On-site rapid screening with immediate preliminary results.
How Instant Tests Work:
- Urine or oral fluid specimen collected
- Sample applied to test device
- Results visible in 5-10 minutes
- Preliminary results only (non-negative must be lab-confirmed)
When to Use Instant Tests:
- Pre-employment screening (quick initial screen)
- Reasonable suspicion (immediate decision needed)
- Post-accident (preliminary results while awaiting lab)
- Walk-in testing
- Personal testing
Important Limitations:
- NOT acceptable for DOT testing (federal law requires lab confirmation)
- Non-negative results MUST be lab-confirmed
- Cannot be legally reported to employer without lab confirmation
- Less accurate than laboratory testing
- Limited to basic drug panels
Instant + Lab Confirmation: Best practice is instant screening followed by automatic lab confirmation for any non-negative results. This provides:
- Immediate preliminary results
- Legally defensible lab confirmation
- MRO review for positives
- Complete chain of custody
Cost: $25-$40 (instant only), $60-$80 (instant + lab confirmation)

Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I get a drug test near me? Use our location finder above to search by ZIP code or city. We have 20,000+ certified collection sites nationwide, including Quest Diagnostics, LabCorp, occupational health clinics, and urgent care centers. Most locations offer walk-in service or same-day appointments.
How much does a drug test cost? Standard 5-panel urine drug tests cost $45-$55. 10-panel tests cost $75-$90. Hair follicle tests cost $125-$150. DOT drug tests cost $45-$55. Prices vary by location and testing type. Employers typically pay for pre-employment and workplace testing.
How long does a drug test take? The collection process takes 15-30 minutes. Results are available in 24-72 hours for negative tests. Non-negative results take 48-72 hours due to MRO review and confirmatory testing. Same-day results are available with instant testing (preliminary only).
Can I walk in without an appointment? Most collection sites accept walk-ins, though wait times vary. Appointments are recommended to minimize wait time. For DOT and employer testing, you typically receive authorization with collection site information and appointment details.
What do I need to bring for a drug test? Bring valid photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or state ID) and your authorization form from your employer or testing agency. If paying yourself, bring payment method. List of prescription medications is optional but helpful.
How long do drugs stay in your system? Urine testing typically detects: marijuana 3-30 days (depends on frequency), cocaine 2-4 days, amphetamines 2-4 days, opiates 2-4 days, PCP 7-14 days. Hair testing detects use for 90 days. Oral fluid detects recent use within 24-48 hours.
What is a 5-panel drug test? A 5-panel drug test screens for five drug classes: marijuana (THC), cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and PCP. This is the most common employment drug test and is required for all DOT testing. It uses urine specimen and takes 24-72 hours for results.
What is a 10-panel drug test? A 10-panel test includes everything in a 5-panel plus: benzodiazepines, barbiturates, methadone, propoxyphene, and Quaaludes. This expanded panel is common for pre-employment screening, probation testing, and positions with higher security requirements.
Do I get my drug test results? For employment testing, results go to your employer. The Medical Review Officer (MRO) may contact you if results are non-negative to discuss medications. You can request your results from the MRO. For personal testing, you receive results directly.
What happens if I fail a drug test? For employment: The MRO contacts you to discuss any prescription medications that might explain a positive result. If verified positive, your employer is notified and you may not be hired (pre-employment) or may face termination or mandatory SAP evaluation (current employee).
Can I test positive from secondhand marijuana smoke? No. Testing cutoff levels are set high enough that passive inhalation will not cause a positive result. You must actively use marijuana to test positive. Secondhand smoke will not register above the cutoff threshold in standard testing.
How accurate are drug tests? Laboratory drug tests using SAMHSA-certified labs are highly accurate (95-99%). All non-negative results undergo confirmatory testing using GC/MS or LC/MS technology. False positives are rare. MRO review eliminates most potential errors by reviewing medications.
Can prescription medications cause a positive test? Yes, some prescriptions can trigger positive results: opiates (pain medications like oxycodone, hydrocodone), amphetamines (ADHD medications like Adderall), benzodiazepines (anxiety medications like Xanax). The MRO will contact you to verify prescriptions. Bring documentation to collection site.
What is an observed collection? For observed collections, a same-gender collector directly observes you providing the specimen. This is used for DOT return-to-duty tests, follow-up tests, and when there’s reason to believe the donor might try to substitute or adulterate the specimen.
Can I refuse a drug test? For DOT testing, refusal is treated exactly like a positive test—removal from safety-sensitive duties and SAP evaluation required. For non-DOT employment testing, refusal typically means you won’t be hired (pre-employment) or may be terminated (current employee).
How soon will I get my results? Negative results: 24-48 hours typically. Non-negative results: 48-72 hours (MRO review required). Lab-confirmed positive: 3-5 business days. Instant tests: 5-10 minutes (preliminary only, must be lab-confirmed). Most employers receive electronic results within 48 hours.
Do drug testing locations test for alcohol? Yes. Breath alcohol testing (BAT) is available at most locations. Urine alcohol testing (ETG test, detects use up to 80 hours) is available. DOT alcohol testing requires breath test using DOT-approved evidential breath testing (EBT) device.
Are there drug testing locations open on weekends? Yes. Many Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp locations offer Saturday hours (typically 8 AM – 12 PM or 8 AM – 2 PM). Some occupational health clinics have Saturday availability. Sunday testing is limited but available at select locations. Call ahead to confirm weekend hours.
What if I can’t provide enough urine for the test? If you cannot provide 45mL of urine, you’ll be given water to drink and up to 3 hours to provide adequate specimen. If still unable after 3 hours, the test is reported as a “refusal to test” (DOT) or you may be sent to a physician to determine if there’s a medical reason.
Can I eat or drink before a drug test? Yes, you can eat and drink normally before a urine drug test. Avoid excessive water intake (over-hydration can dilute the sample). For blood tests, fasting may be required. For breath alcohol tests, avoid using mouthwash or breath mints 15 minutes before testing.
How do I prepare for a drug test? No special preparation needed. Don’t drink excessive water or use detox products. Bring valid ID and authorization form. Disclose prescription medications to the MRO if you test non-negative. Arrive with a moderately full bladder (you need to provide 45mL specimen).
Do all drug tests test for marijuana? Yes, marijuana (THC) is included in all standard drug test panels (5-panel, 10-panel, etc.) and is required in DOT testing. Some states with legal recreational marijuana still allow employers to test and maintain drug-free workplace policies. Federal positions always test for marijuana.
